When should I fish with the Greenwells Glory?

This graph shows trends of when fly fishermen use the Greenwells Glory to fish with and what hooks are most popular throughout the fly-fishing season.

About the Greenwells Glory Trout Fly

The Greenwells Glory is a classic pattern that was created by James Wright at the end of the nineteenth century. This dry winged fly is very successful when olives are present and is considered a must-have pattern in any angler's fly box, particularly if fishing in the UK or Europe.

Expert Tip:

James Wright created the fly in May 1854 to imitate an insect he had never seen himself, relying solely on a description given to him by Canon Greenwell. Despite this, the fly was an immediate success, and during the first two days it was used, it "nearly emptied the river".

When fishing the Greenwells Glory, anglers should focus on casting the fly to areas where olives are likely to be present, such as along the edges of weed beds or in calm, slow-moving water. The fly can be fished with a variety of techniques, including dead drift presentations, skittering, and gentle twitches, depending on the fishing conditions and the behaviour of the fish.
